Digital Impressions

Digital impressions in dentistry represent a cutting-edge technology that allows dentists to create a virtual, computer-generated replica of a patient’s oral structures using optical scanning devices or lasers. In fact, this modern technique replaces traditional physical molds with a more accurate and comfortable digital process.

Specifically, digital impressions are captured using an intraoral scanner, which is a wand-like tool connected to a computer. During the procedure, the dentist moves this wand over the patient’s teeth and gums. This allows the dentist to capture detailed 3D images of the oral cavity. As the scan progresses, the software processes the data and creates a real-time, manipulable 3D rendering of the patient’s mouth on a nearby monitor.
